Billing Brook School

New Car Park

The school had an area of waste land with heavy vegetation, on a significant slope, that they wanted to reclaim in order to provide additional parking which was desperately needed. A new access would need to be created to access the newly formed level car park as well as lighting and EV car charging points.

The challenges on this project were to excavate all the existing tree stumps out of the woodland bank whilst retaining the stability of the back itself. We had to form an access route to get to the working area and ensure all of the remains of the woodland and vegetation were removed sufficiently to retain the stability of the bank. We then had to build up the levels to provide the new car park at the same level of the existing playground to ensure the ongoing access was sustainable and safe.

We also had to design a new surface drainage solution to connect into the exiting drainage system without overloading it. We utilised pre-cast concrete units and standard drainage materials so that we could expediate the works to be carried out in the six week holiday in order to reduce the impact on the schools day to day activities. The project was completed within budget and on programme.

The solution was to grub out all the tree stumps whilst working with our structural engineer to develop a design suitable for the specific conditions. We designed a retaining wall system out of precast concrete units. The units were all formed at different heights in order to accommodate the level changes across the site.
