Haberdashers’ Adams

New MUGA facility

Following a competitive tender process, we were awarded a JCT Design & Build contract to extend, refurbish and provide flood lighting to an existing disused netball court.

The main challenge with this project was the significant change in levels to the area that we were extending into. Also the area was used as a drainage run off area for the schools main soakaway and flooded during excessive rain. We therefore had to consider the drainage of both our MUGA and the schools soakaway whilst creating a design to ensure the level change could be achieved without forcing floodwater over the boundary into local resident's gardens.

The solution we delivered comprised of a permeable tarmacadam surface with a subbase that would allow water to disperse easily. We formed a retaining wall from gabion baskets so that we had a robust structure to retain the load of the higher level but permeable so that the pressure of the groundwater didn't cause any issues in the future. We then increased the drainage in the area based on our calculations of the water requirements and the result of our ground investigations and porosity testing.
